  Steven Kleindorfer

“Instead of depicting objects, Kleindorfer creates swooping patterns of vibrant color and shapes

that form large, abstract expressionistic compositions. Overlapping and swirling through space,

his non-descriptive forms dance across the canvas with highly charged energy and spontaneity.

It’s the physical act of painting that is the subject of his work.”

Shirle Gottlieb, Long Beach Press Telegram, July 19, 2002

Kleindorfer’s paintings come from an intuitive interpretation of nature. Like a hip hop emcee,

Kleindorfer works in a freestyle manner, creating on the fly, channeling the moment. The result

is subliminal graffiti that speaks to us on a purely human level, like a symphony or a jazz solo.

Kleindorfer’s aggressive use of paint and uncooked color delves into the subconscious to capture

a moment of chaos. Feeling limited with forethought imagery, and what Rothko called, “the familiar

identity of things,” Kleindorfer seeks to destroy consciously recognizable imagery, in order to move

beyond it, to another level. His work creates a new way to see that moves away from the subject

as object, as the art moves from depiction to reach pure expression. It is the flow of thought, the flow

of paint, the flow of art, that must remain true, raw, and uncensored. “I am not interested in perfecting

my thoughts, nor my actions,” writes Henry Miller, just to capture the flow.

Steven Kleindorfer earned a B.F.A in studio art from Indiana University’s prestigious John Herron

School of Art, where he studied with William Berkshire and Steven Manheimer. Kleindorfer moved

to Long Beach, California in 1997, where he still lives and paints today.

Influenced heavily by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism of the 1940’s and 50’s, namely

de Kooning, Rothko, Hofmann, and Pollock, Kleindorfer is also inspired by Henry Miller, Dostoyevsky,

Kandinsky, Klee, Basquiat, Haring, urban graffiti art, and many forms of music.
